Literally, Iqta means land or land revenue assigned to an individual on certain conditions. The holders of these Iqtas were the trustful agents of the Sultan.

Explanation:

Under Iqta System, the land of the empire was divided into several large and small tracts called Iqta and assigned these Iqtas to his soldiers, officers and nobles. In the beginning, an Iqta was based upon salary. Later, under Firoz Shah Tughlaq it became hereditary.

As Alauddin Khilji had a great kingdom, Controlling the states by himself was hard for him and he was failing. So, what he did was, divide his lands and gave them to his trusted people who in return would give him certain amount of wealth the province or sub-kingdom achieved. By this system his empire prospered a lot.
