a staement or exprresion whose intended meaning is quite the contrary(opposite) to the apparent or literal meaning.
"Situational irony" occurs when things take a turn opposite to what is intended.

let me give you an example......there is a poem called"THE PROFESSOR" BY NISSIM EZEKIEL.

the professor is a satirical poem which caricatures a professor of geography.A professor hsould have had a command not only on the subject but also on the language he uses .It is indded ironical that far from discussing anything pertaining to any academic subject, the professor talks about himself and his family. He does this in a language full of grammatical mistakes.
He talks like a boastful father,as he speaks of the achievements of his sons.He asserts:

                                 By god's grace,alla my children
                                  Are well settled in life.
                                 One is sales manager,
                                  One is bank manager,
                                 Both have cars.

Another case of irony in this poem is when this professor says that he has eleven grandchildren, even though he says that one has to change with changing times and he advocates that he is not against family planning.

plz read this poem on the internet and then you would understand more properly.....

thank you so much!
