IRRIGATION

  • Irrigation is the artificial application of water to the soil for the purpose of crop production.

  • Its is the engineering of controlling and harnessing the various natural resources of water, by the construction of dams, reservoirs, storage tanks, canals and headworks and finally distributing the water to the agricultural ground.

Main Methods Of Irrigation

  • Drip Method of Irrigation: Water is supplied through small pipes with holes in this method. These are aligned in such a way that they give plants just water.

  • Sprinklers system: This method uses sprinklers to supply water in the form of a shower.

Objectives Of Irrigation

  • To supply essential moisture for plant growth
  • Transportation of fertilizers (Fertigation)
  • To save the crop from drying during draughts.
  • To help in field preparation, dust control etc.
  • To soften the soil pan.
  • Cooling of the soil and atmosphere to create favourable environment for crop growth.
