Answer:
Ouestion:-
What is irrigation?
Answer:-
India is an agricultural country and, for successful agriculture, water is an important input. This water can be supplied naturally by rainfall, but if it is insufficient, then it must be provided by artificial means. This process of supplying water by artificial means is called irrigation.
Agriculture needs water at the right time. All inputs may be good, but without water agriculture cannot prosper. Irrigation is the key to the success of India's agriculture because of the following reasons:-
1. Uneven distribution of rain:- the average distribution of rainfall in India is about 110cm. Places like Assam and West Bengal receive 150-250cm, while Rajasthan rarely gets even 25cm.
2. India's agricultural season extends over winter too. But the greater part of India has dry winter. Irrigation allows year-long cultivation.
3. Indian monsoons are most uncertain. Late arrival or early withdrawal of the monsoons affects crop production severely. Only irrigation can provide security to agriculture from such irregularity.
4. The main element of the Green Revolution is the application of regular water supply to the high yielding crops. Irrigation is, therefore, necessary, even though rainfall is sufficiently available and regular.
Hope this'll help you.
