The prevailing concept among Muslims, which is that Islam is a religion and a state, is an axiom that no Muslim feels the need to discuss. Before answering the question, we ask the following and important question: had any “good” religious state emerged in the history of Islam?
We find a quick answer in the Muslim Mind, saying yes: The state that Prophet Muhammad had founded in Madinah, after he emigrated from Makkah, and after he made alliances with tribes and resolved conflicts between them.
We must analyze the history of Islam to see that many Islamic Ideas of today like this one, were made up by people during the periods following the rise of the Umayyad and the Abbasside states, due to the necessity for them to preserve their rule over the masses, those Islamic ideas had become during the time religious beliefs, It is known that there were superstitions based on old and fictitious beliefs, and that humans always had linked their convictions and realities with their beliefs and religions. Did the human who lived in the ninth century AD know better than the human of today? No way!
The Islamic ways of thinking today such as “the salafi way” or “the shia way” or others harm the religion of Islam more than they help, because those ways of thinking are regressive and recessive, they go back rather than going forward, by considering the predecessors more reasonable and better than the successors, the successors do not have the right to correct the opinions and the works done by the predecessors in the domain of ‘Hadith’, such as (Sahih Al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim or others), thus those ways of reasoning do not correct themselves with time, they bias themselves, and imposes themselves as religious beliefs and authority, reinforced by the religious scholars. A Muslim should think like a human being not like a Muslim.
Muhammad lived in Quraysh more than 10 years, with no notion of the religious state, he lived among Muslims and pagans, until the pagans began torturing the Muslims and killing them.Only then he considered the necessity of leaving Makkah.
The answer is that in the history of Islam, there was never a religious state. There were only political states trying to find a false ideological Islamic legitimacy to justify their rule.
The idea of the necessity of creating an Islamic caliphate in every Muslim mind since the death of Muhammad, is one of the basic reasons why Muslims are divided today, an idea with no basis in their main book: The Quran.
