If the external solution has a similar solute or solvent concentration as the cell then it is called an isotonic solution

In an isotonic solution during Osmosis the water crosses the cell membrane in both directions but the amount of water moving inside the cell is equal to the amount of water moving out and therefore the size of the cell remains the same
