Isobars: Atoms of different elements with different atomic numbers, which have the same mass number, are known as isobars.

Isobars are atoms (nuclides) of different chemical elements that have the same number of nucleons. Correspondingly, isobars differ in atomic number (or a number of protons) but have the same mass number. An example of a series of isobars would be  the 40S, 40Cl, 40Ar, 40K, and 40Ca.

isotopes are members of a family of an element that all have the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons. The number of protons in a nucleus determines the element's atomic number on the Periodic Table. For example, carbon has six protons and is atomic number 6.
