Twain had mentioned that while writing the book he was ignorant about the problems with slavery and had his character empathise with them. The use of the word ‘ni..ers’ was extremely offensive during the period when the novel was published. People also disapprove of the way Jim’s character(a runaway slave) is portrayed.
