The Inter Tropical Convergence Zone, or ITCZ, is a belt of low pressure which circles the Earth generally near the equator where the trade winds of the Northern and Southern Hemispheres come together. It is characterised by convective activity which generates often vigorous thunderstorms over large areas

ITCZ means intertropical convergence zone. It is also known as monsoon Trough during the monsoon season. The trough and its Axis keep on shifting, Northward or Southward, which determines the spatial distribution of rainfall. when the trough Lies over the plains, rainfall is over this reason. when the axis shift closer to Himalayas, there is a dry spell over the plains and widespread rainfall in mountainous catchment area.
