IUPAC name is CH2=CH2 is Ethene.

IUPAC or International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry provides a set of rules to name organic compounds.

The rules are as follows:

  • First we have to find the longest carbon chain present in the given compound, this longest chain is called the parent chain. If the length of the parent chain is 1,2 or 3 we will add 'meth', 'eth' or 'prop' respectively.
  • Then one have to find the groups present in that compound.
  • According to the functional group we have to add prefixes and suffixes to the compound name. If we have multiple functional group we have to arrange them in alphabetical order. Carboxylic acid , amide , aldehyde , ketone are different functional groups.
  • If there is only Carbon-Carbon single bond we add suffix "-ane" , in case of double bonds we add "-ene' and in triple bonds "-yne".

Based on these rules IUPAC name of the given compound is Ethene as length of the parent chain is two and double bonds are present.
