The ionization energy of the elements increases as one moves up a given group because the electrons are held in lower-energy orbitals, closer to the nucleus and thus more tightly bound (harder to remove).
you move down a group, first ionization energy decreases. WHY? Electrons are further from the nucleus and thus easier to remove the outermost one. 2) As you move across a period, first ionization energy increases.
