The answer is pneumonia.

Johnsy’s illness is pneumonia and its intensity was severe, which made her chances of survival very slim. This disease causes inflammation of the lungs and affects the small air sacs called alveoli. Symptoms of pneumonia are cough, breathlessness, fever and chest pain.

However, she was a girl of self-determination and she was not willing to die. Rather, she wanted to live at any cost. It was this stubbornness that cured her illness and get back to normal life.
