The local wind systems of India that cause thunderstorms, rains, and even hailstones are called as Kal Baishakhi.

EXPLANATION:

  • There are several local wind systems in India which are effective in relatively smaller areas. Kal Baishakhi is one such local wind system that brings tremendous thunderstorms, heavy rainfall and sometimes even hailstones in the eastern part of India, especially in areas of West Bengal.
  • The name is derived from Bangla language in which Kal is used for the colour of sky which is black due to heavy and dense clouds and Baishakhi is used to denote the season in which it generally occurs which is in months of April and May and sometimes March too.
  • It is generally formed over the states of Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, and West Bengal. It is pre-monsoon rainfall which is very helpful in agriculture especially in the Kharif crops in these regions.
