Ketone is a functional group that contains the carbonyl group.

  • Carbonyl group is the bond between carbon and oxygen.
  • Ketones are compounds used in biology and chemistry.
  • The structure of ketone is R-C(=O)-R', where R and R' are carbon-containing substituents. It can be methyl, ethyl or any other substituents.
  • Ketone can have benzene ring as well.
  • Ketone should not have hydrogen atom attached to it.

IUPAC names of first four numbers of this series:

1.Propanone(CH3-CO-CH3)  It has 3-carbons.

2.Butanone(CH3-CO-CH2-CH3), has 4 carbons.

3.Pentan-3-one(CH3-CH2-CO-CH2-CH3), contains 5 carbons.

4.Hexan-2-one(CH3-CH2-CH2-CH2-CO-CH3), has 6 carbons in it.
