Khilafat movement has its origin in the First World War.Turkey was among the defeated nations after the war.As a result,it was partitioned and the Sultan of Turkey was deprived of most of his powers.Muslims everywhere wanted to restore his position as he was regarded as their spiritual head or Khalifa.In India,the Khilafat Movement was launched under the leadership of Ali brothers,Maulana Mohammad Ali and Shaukat Ali.
Gandhi also supported this movement as he realized that it was a good opportunity to forge Hindu-Muslim unity.
