Tetany or tetany seizure is a medical sign consisting of the involuntary contraction of muscles, which may be caused by disease or other conditions that increase the action potential frequency of muscle cells or the nerves that innervate them

In general terms, "Tetany" can be defined as a symptom which is characterised by muscle cramps, spasms or tremors.

  • Tetany may occur in any desired part of the body, such as the face muscles, finger muscles, calf muscles, etc.

  • Serious causes of tetany include severe diarrhoea and kidney diseases.

  • Low levels of calcium in the body is a common cause for tetany.

  • The medical term used to describe low levels of calcium is, "Hypocalcemia".
