In economics, the cycle of poverty is the "set of factors or events by which poverty, once started, is likely to continue unless there is outside intervention". ... The poverty cycle can be called the "development trap" or "poverty trap" when it is applied to countries.

It is a circular process by which poor people remain poor through combination of challenges imposed on them and poor choices on their part.

The vicious cycle of poverty implies a circular constellation of forces tending to act and react upon one another in such a way as to keep a poor country in the state of poverty.
