LAN : Local Area Network
It is a connected set of computers and other devices. Each device is called node (example : computer, printer, etc.).

LAN topologies are Ring topology, Star topology and Bus topology.

Ring topology : connects all nodes in a closed loop on which messages travel in one direction.

Star topology : centers around one node to which all others are connected and through which all messages are sent.

Bus topology : nodes are connected to a single communication line that carries messages in both directions.

LAN advantages :
- improves productivity due to faster work.
- provides easy maintenance.
- new systems can be installed and configured easily.

disadvantage :
- limited number of systems can only be connected.
- cannot cover large area.
-network performance degrades as number of users exceeds.
