In general terms, the " Larynx " can be defined as the first person of the " Trachea ", present in the neck.

E X T R A I N F O R M A T I O N :

❍ The Larynx is also known as the " Voice Box ".

❍ The wall of the larynx is composed of nine pieces of cartilage.

❍ Three of the nine cartilage occur singly.

They are –

  • Throid cartilage

  • Epiglottis cartilage

  • Cricoid cartilage

❍ The other three of the nine cartilages occur in pairs.

They are –

  • Arytenoid cartilage

  • Cuneiform cartilage

  • Corniculate cartilage

❍ The last cartilage of the nine cartilages is a small nodule like cartilage, which is attached to the anterior tip of each arytenoid cartilage. This cartilage is known as the " Cartilage of Santorini ".

❍ The mid - ventral portion of the thyroid cartilage forms the " Laryngeal Prominecence ".

❍ The " Laryngeal Prominecence " is commonly known as the " Adam's Apple ".

❍ The Larynx contains two vocal cords.

❍ The vocal cords are generally elastic fibres.

❍ The vocal cords are responsible for the production of sound.

❍ The phenomenon of infection or inflammation of the larynx is known as " Laryngitis ".
