The perpendicular distance between the path of emergent ray and the direction of the incident ray is called the lateral displacement. In the figure above, XY is the perpendicular distance or thelateral displacement.

Following are the factors on which lateral displacement depends:

The thickness of the glass slab.

Refractive index of the glass slab.

The angle at which incident ray enters the glass slab.
