Appearent depth refers to the illusionary depth which we see instead of the real dwpth it occurs due to refraction of light it means appearing of something as less or more deep

Lateral shift refers to the slight shift in position of an object when it is placed in a transparent fluid like water it also occurs due to refraction of light ex pencil submerged in water
