the principle, originated by Gregor Mendel, stating that during the production of gametes the two copies of each hereditary factor segregate so that offspring acquire one factor from each parent.

The laws that direct heredity was identified by a monk named Gregor Mendel in the 1860s. The Law of Segregation asserts that each specific organism carries two alleles for each trait and that these alleles divide (separate) during meiosis such that each gamete comprises of only one of the alleles. An offspring thus gets a pair of alleles for a trait by acquiring homologous chromosomes from the parent organisms: one allele for each trait from each parent.
