What is Lederberg's replica plate experiment?
Answers
Lederberg's replica plate experiment:-
1. It was performed by Joshua Lederberg & Esther Lederberg.
2. On agar plate they start culturing the bacterial cells and then many such bacterial colonies were obtained.
3. On a velvet which was covered by wooden block they start preparing a replica of the same master plate by gently pressing.
4. Now on agar plate they practised for preparation of a replica on the agar plate which was having antibiotic penicillin.
6. Then they came to a conclusion that the bacteria which was survived were penicillin resistant penicillin as they were having resistant mutant gene which helped them in new environment to survive.
7. So we can say that mutations are pre adaptive.
8. By the help of natural selection everything goes fixed according to the environment in over and over years or generations.
The experiment done by the scientists is known as replica plating experiment. A bacteria are grown into isolated colonies on plates. These colonies can be reproduce from an original plate to new plates by "stamping" the original plate with a cloth and then stamping empty plates with the same cloth.
