Lenticels are raised loose cork tissue in woody stems, roots and some fruits. Live non-photosynthetic cells tissue cells below the dead cork layer need oxygen gas. They also need to get rid of carbon dioxide waste gas. Lenticels allow oxygen in and carbon dioxide out.

It's functions as a pore allowing for the interchange of gases between the interior tissue and the surrounding air. Internal plant tissue is impermeable to gases without lenticel. This is the basic information all we need to to know about it's functions
