A lichen is a composite organism that emerges from algae or cyanobacteria living among the filaments (hyphae) of the fungi in a mutually beneficial symbiotic relationship. The fungi benefit from the carbohydrates produced by the algae or cyanobacteria via photosynthesis.

Lichens are a life form that is a partnership of fungus and algae. Fungus provides water, carbon dioxide and inorganic salt. In return, alga provides food made from photosynthesis. The fungus is the dominant which gives it a shape of a thallus.

Lichens are found in places where there is hardly any pollution. If there is any pollution they will die.

They are the oldest plant family in the world. They grow really slowly.  They only grow 1 mm in around 100 years.
