Lichens are a symbiotic relationship b/w algae and fungi. Algal component synthesis carbohydrates by photosynthesis and provides nutrition to fungal component and fungal component provides shelter and absorbs mineral nutrition and water for its partner. The algal component is called Phycobiont and fungal component, Mycobiont. The fungal component either belongs to ascomycetes or basidiomycetes and the algal component —chlophyceae. They are of three types Crustose, foliose and fruticose. Lichens are biological indicator of air pollution. (especially sulphur dioxide)
