The branch of physics which deals with the study pf light and its properties is called optics.
The instruments which works on the principle of light are called optical instruments.
Ex- Human eye, camera , microcope, telescope, etc.
Light is a form of energy which produces sensation of vision.
Light waves are electromagnetic waves or non mechanical waves because they do not require any medium for their propagation.
Light waves can travel in vacuum as well as in medium.
The velocity of light in vacuum is maximum and it is 3×10^8m/s or 3×10^5km/s or 3×10^10cm/s.
When light passes from one medium to other medium all the physical quantities like :- Velocity, wave length , amplitude etc will change only Frequency of light will remain the same.
The wavelength of visible light lies between 4×10^-7m to 8× 10^-7m or 400nm - 800nm or 4000 angstrom - 8000 angstrom.
If the wavelength of light waves become less than 400nm then, it become ultraviolet light and when the wavelength of light rays is more than 800nm it becomes
INFRARED LIGHT.
We cannot see ultraviolet and infrared light.
Light always travel in a straight line and its motion called rectilinear propagation of light.
When light strikes on any object or any surface some part of light will be reflected back, some part of light will transmit to other medium.
When any small opaque object come in the path of light it bends around the corners of the object. This phenomenon is called diffraction of light.
The velocity of light in vacuum is 3×10^8m/s and it is denoted by C
The velocity of light in air is 2.99 × 10^8m/s bur in case of numericals, It can be considered 3× 10^8m/s for simplicity.
The velocity of light is minimum in diamond because diamond is the hardest substance in the universe.
In modern time, light is used for telecommunication purposes and in medical science under the name of optical fibre.
___-- Some Important terms--_____
≥ Source of light - Anything which can emit light is called source of light.
There are two types of sources :-
1. Self luminous
2. Non- luminous
A sources which have their own light is called self- luminous source.
Ex- Sun, stars , C.F.L, tubelight, Burning candle, etc.
Sources which do not have their own light are called non- luminous sources.
Ex- Table, Chair , Stone , etc.
≥ Medium
A source thorugh which light can pass or not is called medium
There are three types of medium.
1.Transparent medium :- Through which light can completely pass
Ex - Pure water, high quality glass, etc.
2. Translucent medium :- Through which some part of light will pass and some do not
Ex - Newspaper , Butter paper ,etc.
3. Opaque medium :- Through which light cannot pass
Ex - Stone, Board , Muddy water, etc.
