Light year is the distance traveled by light in one year. This unit is used for measuring the distance between the stars because the distance between them is very large. For example, the distance to the next nearest big galaxy, the Andromeda Galaxy, from earth is around 21,000,000,000,000,000,000 km. but if we write that in light years, it will be around 2.3 million light years.

1 light year = 9,460,730,472,580.8 km or about 9.5 trillion km
