Answer:

Lightning is a naturally occurring electrostatic discharge during which two electrically charged regions in the atmosphere or ground temporarily equalize themselves, causing the

instantaneous release of as much as one billion joules of energy.

or

as the the occurrence of a natural electrical discharge of very short duration and high voltage between a cloud and the ground or within a cloud, accompanied by a bright flash and typically also thunder.

Lightning is a sudden discharge of charges from clouds to the surface of Earth. In this process of high volt of electricity is released from clouds to surface of Earth. This phenomenon is seen as a bright streak of light in sky.

Light rays which come from sun heat the atmosphere and thus the air in atmosphere also get heated, which results in the vaporizing of water bodies on earth. The vapours get up in the air and form clouds when these clouds rub against the air molecules they acquire charge due to to friction between both molecules. Now in this case some clouds gets negatively charged and some clouds get positively charged.

Now when two clouds with a large amount of negative and positive charge gets close to each other them this results in ionization of air between clouds and thus the electrons start to travel from one cloud to another. This journey of electrons from one cloud to other is called lightining. Lightning is transfer of electrons from one cloud to other cloud. There are maximum chances of lightining to strike a object of tall height. Like tall buildings.

To prevent tall buildings from lightning we put a lightning rod at floor of building this lighting rod is a good conductor of electricity and thus catches the lightning and this lightning rod is connected to earth does the lightning which is catched by lightning rod is earthed to earth and this protects the building from a very destructive effect.

Earthing is the process of transfering of charges to earth.
