it is a natural electrical discharge of very short duration and high voltage between a cloud and the ground or within a cloud, accompanied by a bright flash and also thunder. the whole cloud fills up with electrical charges. lighter, positively charged particles form at the top of the cloud. heavier, negatively charged particles sink to the bottom of the cloud. when the positive and negative charges grow large enough, a giant spark - lightning - occurs between the two charges within the cloud. This is like a static electricity sparks you see, but much bigger.

Explanation:

Lightning is a high energy electrical discharge between two adjacent clouds or a cloud or ground. The phenomenon of lightning is caused by flow of electrical charges in the atmosphere. It occurs because of a massive flow of charges from one to another cloud. When clouds move from one place to another, the friction with surrounding air causes charges to develop on them. the Magnitude of the charges increases at the clouds continue to move. Usually the lower part of a cloud acquires a negative charge, whereas the upper part of the cloud acquires a positive charge. when lower part of the cloud passes over the electrical neutral ground a positive charge is induced on the ground. The insulation of the air brakes town and electrons flow through air to neutralize discharge difference. This generate and use electric spark in the sky and is observed as lightning.
