Lightning:
- It is a electrostatic discharge.
- It occurs when region of different charges equalise themselves.
- It is a spontaneous release of energy which is values around one Gigajoule.
Causes of lightning:
- Clouds are accumulation of water vapour. Water molecules are rubbed with each other and charged due to friction.
- Top of clouds are positively charged and bottom of clouds are negatively charged.
- So, the bottom of the cloud have negative charge and lands/roof of building have positive charges (less electrons). When these to come closer, the negative charges moves towards positive charges.
- This causes a flash which is lightning.
