The limiting reagent (or limiting reactant, LR) in a chemical reaction is the substance that is totally consumed when the chemical reaction is complete. The amount of product formed is limited by this reagent, since the reaction cannot continue without it.

In a chemical reaction limiting reagent is the reactant that is present in a limited amount (i.e. it is present less than the actual amount required). And because of the limited amount of the reagent a reaction stops when the limiting reagent is exhausted , as the reaction can not be completed due to lack of the limiting reagent.
