Linear Momentum. Momentum simply means mass in motion or it is the quantity of motion of a moving body. The more momentum a moving object has, the harder it is to stop. The quantitative value of momentum is equal to the product of mass 'm' of an object an its speed 'v.

ANSWER:

The linear momentum of the particle is defined as P = mv.

The momentum of N-particle system is the (vector) sum of the momenta of the N-particles.

But in simple words, we can describe the momentum as the product of mass and velocity of the body i.e. m * v.

Now, if the external forces acting on the system at up to 0, the centre of the mass moves with a constant velocity which means that P = constant. Thus, the linear momentum of a system remains constant if the external forces acting on the system add up to zero. This who is known as the principle of conservation of linear momentum.

EXAMPLE:

we can also consider that, a single particle on which no force acts ( imagine a practical situation where this can be achieved ). Looking from an inertial frame the particle is moving with uniform velocity and so its Momentum remains constant as time passes.
