Litmus :

Litmus is an indicator which is extracted from lichens.

Generally, Litmus is of two types

  • Blue litmus

  • Red litmus

There are three types of substances in our nature

  • Acidic

  • Basic

  • Neutral

Litmus is used to find the nature of the substance.

  • Red litmus :

This turns blue if the substance is basic and remains unchanged if the substance is acidic or neutral.

  • Blue litmus :

This turns red if the substance is acidic and remains unchanged if substance is basic or neutral.

Therefore, Litmus paper is used to find nature of the given substance.

  • Note :

We can't find power of acid or base with litmus paper.
