Local government in India refers to governmental jurisdictions below the level of the state. India is a federal republic with three spheres of government: central, state and local. The 73rd and 74th constitutional amendments give recognition and protection to local governments and in addition each state has its own local government legislation

Local self-government means that residents in towns, villages and rural settlements are the hosts in their own home. Yes it necessary to have a local-self government because problems at the local level are best solved by local governments. Such governments are distant from such problems and may lack the information to resolve such problems. Instead, problems of this nature should be left to local self governments.
