Logic is the reasoned way to figure out a problem. For example, in the history of geology, James Hutton observed that the rock granite cross-cut the rocks that it occurred in ie was not conformable so he surmised logically that when it formed it was injected into the cold rock in a molten state. Also, when he saw angular unconformities with flat lying sedimentary rocks lying on top of steeply dipping rocks, he surmised that the contact between the steep rocks had been uplifted at an angle whereas he flat lying rocks were merely sediments that had been deposited quiescently.
