It is a depression on the either side of heads behind the nostrils and in front of eye. It is present in pitvipers in loreal area. It is an external opening to an infrared sensing organ which snakes used detect their surrounding using their 'natural' infrared thermal radiation sensing technique . I hope this helps you.

Answer:

The loreal pit is the deep depression, or fossa, in the loreal area on either side of the head in pit vipers. It is located behind the nostril and in front of the eye, but below the line that runs between the centers of each. It is the external opening to an extremely sensitive infrared detecting organ.
