A lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes directly behind Earth and into its shadow. This can occur only when the Sun, Earth, and Moon are exactly or very closely aligned (in syzygy), with Earth between the other two.

this is the phase when Earth comes between the sun and moon and blocks the light of the sun. this can be  divided into three types including:  total, partial and penumbral lunar eclipse. The light appears reddish because the sunset and sunrise does and this makes the moon red ( blood moon).
