In general terms, "Lung capacities" can be defined as the combinations of specific lung volumes.

■ Lung capacities are of 4 types.
■ The 4 lung capacities are as follows :-
- Inspiratory capacity (IC) - The sum of the tidal volume and the inspiratory reserve volume, is known as Inspiratory capacity (500 + 3100 = 3600 ml).
- Functional residual capacity (FRC) - The sum of the residual volume and the expiratory reserve volume, is known as Functional residual capacity (1200 + 1200 = 2400 ml).
- Vital capacity (VC) - The sum of the inspiratory reserve volume, the tidal volume and the expiratory reserve volume, is known as Vital capacity (3100 + 500 + 1200 = 4800).
- Total lung capacity (TLC) - The sum of the vital capacity and the residual volume, is known as Total lung capacity (4800 + 1200 = 6000).
