It is responsible for the removal and filtration of interstitial fluid from tissues, absorbs and transports fatty acids and fats as chyle from the digestive system, and transports many of the cells involved in immune system function via lymph..

Lymph

  • Lymph is a fluid connective tissue.
  • Through the pores present in the walls of capillaries some amount of plasma, proteins and blood cells escape into the intercellular spaces in the tissues to form the tissue fluid or lymph.
  • It is similar to the plasma of the blood but colourless and contains less proteins.
  • Lymph drains into lymphatic capillaries from the intercellular spaces which join to form large lymph vessels

Functions of Lymph

  • Lymph carries digested and absorbed fat from intestine and drains
  • excess fluid from extra cellular space back into the blood.

  • It protects the bodyby killing the germs and drains it out of the body tissues with the help of
  • lymphocytes present in the lymph nodes.

More details....

Difference between blood and lymph.

Blood

  • Blood is red in color due to the presence of RBC’s that have hemoglobin
  • Blood flows from heart to body organs and back to the heart.
  • Flows through blood vessels
  • Contains more proteins

Lymph

  • Pale yellow or colorless due to the absence of RBC’s. (They have special types of WBC’s called lymphocytes.
  • Lymph flows only from tissues to the heart.
  • Flows through lymph vessels.
  • Contains less proteins
