Lysosomes are cell organelles which are noticeable with electron microscope only. They contain digestive enzymes.

They help by carrying out various processes. Some of them are:-

(i) Digestion of Useful Materials.

The organic substances taken up by cells in vacuoles from environment are digested in the lysosomes. This is called intracellular digestion.

(ii) Digestion of Harmful Materials.

The foreign particles (viruses, bacteria, etc.) are disposed of by hydrolyzing them in certain leucocytes and macrophages.

(iii) Digestion of Unwanted Materials.

The dead cells and debris that accumulate at the sites of injury are destroyed in some leucocytes. This is called natural scavenging.

(iv)Renewal of Cells and Organelles.

The old worn out cells and cell organelles are broken down to make the component molecules available for the formation of new cells and cell organelles. Thus, the lysosomes facilitate the turnover of cells in tissues and of organelles in normal cells.

hello!

Lysosomes are found in animal cells. These are spherical anf sack-like vesciles bound by a single membrane. They contain several digestive enzymes which when released bring about break down of several cytoplasmic structures. Sometimes they may help in auto digestion of the cell itself. They enfulf the cell in which they are and are tgus called the SUICIDAL BAGS of the cell.

FUNCTIONS OF LYSOSOMES :

(I) protects the body from pathogens like viruses and bacteria.

(ii) removes and destroys old and worn out cells and cell organelles.

Hope it helps... :)
