A lysosomes is membrane-bound cell organelle that contain digestive enzymes. Lysosomes are involved with various cell process. They break down excess or worn-out cell parts. They may be used in destroy invading viruses and bacteria. If the cell is damaged beyond repair, lysosomes can help it to self-desturct in a process called programmed cell death or apoptosis.

The area within the membrane is called lumen, which contain the hydrolic enzyme and other cellular debris.

The pH level of lumen lies between 4.5 and 5.0 which make it quite acid . It is almost comparable to the function of acid found in the stomach.
