Coming from a biochemistry perspective, I tend to think of macromolecules as being formed from many subunits.  The four classes of macromolecules that make life possible, for example, are proteins (built by linking amino acids), nucleic acids (built by connecting nucleotides), lipids (formed of a headgroup with fatty acids or joining cyclic structures), and carbohydrates (built from simple sugars).
