the direction of magnetic field at any point is the direction of the force on a north pole at the point.
to demonstrate the effect, a plotting compass is placed close to a long straight wire which is carrying current.

When a current of some magnitude flowing through a conductor then magnetic field produced around it ..
This is called magnetic effect of current..

Hans oersted is the 1st who observed this phenomena in 1820.
