A magnetic field is the magnetic effect of electric currents and magnetic materials. The magnetic field at any given point is specified by both a direction and a magnitude. To determine the direction of magnetic field you need to use a needle magnet or small compass. Place the compass at any point on the plane. Then follow the direction the compass is making. Mark the position of the compass and connect the markers. You will get a field line. Repeat the same thing with different starting points and you will obtain the field lines at a place.
