Magnetic lines of force are the imaginary lines used to represent the magnetic field around a magnet or a current carrying coil or wire.
The properties of magnetic field lines of force are
- They are closed and continuous curves.
- The magnetic field lines of force don't intersect each other at any point. This is because if they intersect, it means that the compass placed at that point points in two different directions, which is not possible.
- The magnetic field lines of force are believed to move from North to South outside the magnet and from South to North inside the magnet.
- The relative strength of the magnetic field around a magnet can be told by looking at the magnetic field lines of force. Where ever the lines are closer, the magnetic field is strong as compared to the areas where the lines are not close.
- Magnetic field is a vector quantity, ie, it has both a direction as mentioned earlier and a magnitude, whose SI unit is Tesla.
