This method of separation is used when one of the components of a mixture is magnetic, that is, it gets attracted towards a magnet.

For example, when a magnet is brought near iron pins, the pins tend to cling to it.The property, of attraction of magnetic substance(like Iron), towards magnet, is used to separate out such substance present in a given mixture.

Scrap iron is removed from a heap of waste materials(garbage) by using strong magnets fitted to a crane. This iron can then be melted and refused.
