well if I say, the magnitude of a physical quantity is the power to which the units of fundamental quantities mass, length and time are raised to obtain the unit of a physical quantity. This is known as the dimension of the given quantity.

For example,
see,
unit of density=mass/volume
or, if we describe it through units we get,
density=kg/m^3
So here density can be described in terms of dimensions in the following way,
[M^1L^3T^0] where m is mass, l is length and t is time. TIME IS ZERO SINCE IT HAS NO WORK IN DERIVING THE UNIT.
