The Mahābhārata is one of the two major Sanskrit epics of ancient India, the other being the Rāmāyaṇa. It narrates the struggle between two groups of cousins in the Kurukshetra War and the fates of the Kaurava and the Pāṇḍava princes and their successors.
Mahabharata reinforced the idea that it was valuable. Under patriliny, sons could claim the resources (including the throne in the case of kings) of their fathers when the latter died. In absence of a male heir to the throne, brothers succeeded one another, sometimes other kinsmen claimed the throne.

Patriliny means tracing descent from father to son and grandson. In a patrilinial society, male gender becomes extremely important. Mahabharata reinforced the idea that it was valuable.
