Answer:

To smoothen the revenue collection mechanism, the company devised three revenue collection systems.

  1. Permanent Settlement
  2. Mahalwari System
  3. Ryotwari System

In the 1830s, The Mahalwari System was introduced in Western Uttar Pradesh, parts of Madhya Pradesh and Punjab.

In These areas, land was owned collectively by a group of villagers, called Mahals.

The task of collecting the revenue and paying it to the company was given to the admin of each mahal.

The revenue demand was not fixed permanently; it could be revised periodically.

The Mahalwari system was introduced by Holt Mackenzie in 1822. The other two systems were the Permanent Settlement in Bengal in 1793 and the Ryotwari system in 1820. It covered the states of Punjab, Awadh and Agra, parts of Orissa, and Madhya Pradesh.
